The Halloween weekend cruise to Fredericksburg to rendezvous with the Houston
Chevy Club was great fun and never a dull moment. Those who made it out from our
club included Dan & Kay Bowen with their wagon, Wayne & Leslie Casteel with their
57, (hauling Wayne's fresh 61 Cushman Scooter) Pat & Margaret Corbell with their
55, Joel & Barbara Parrish with their 56, Craig & Cristy Potthoff with their 72
Mali-boo, and Doug & Rita Travis with their 57. To those of you who didn't go . .
. . . all I can say is you messed up! The Houston gang
had six or seven Tri-5's, and one guest with a nice 56 (series62) 4dr. Cadillac.
Friday afternoon the Houston gang stopped at the Salt Lick for lunch and were met
there by Dan & Kay, Don & Marilyn Peterson, Wayne Casteel and Joel & Barbara
Parish. After eating lunch, the group proceeded to Dan Bowen’s shop. After being
treated to a tour of the shop and to Kay's homemade cookies, they headed out to
Fredericksburg.
The Bowen's and Potthoff's took their RV's and set up at Lady Bird Park. The rest
stayed at the Super 8 motel downtown. Friday evening we gathered at the motel
parking lot for a "BS and Beer" session. Not sure who came up with that...I think
one of the wives...but anyway, it's accurate. When it got dark and chilly
we divided up and half went for Chinese and the other half went for Mexican
cuisine. After dinner we all returned on foot, the same way we left, and continued
with our earlier session with a few other assorted beverages thrown in. It got
really good after that and that's all I'm allowed to say.
Saturday morning brought clear skies, semi-clear heads, and gorgeous weather. After
breakfast we reunited at the parking lot and about half went to peruse the antique
and specialty shops, while the other half jumped in our cars and cruised. Where? Why
Luckenbach of course! We hung out there, took pictures,
listened to live music,
checked out our club bricks in front of the dance hall, and picked right back up
on the BS&B. Some ate lunch there, some drank lunch there.
Next we lit out of there (figuratively not literally) and drove to Stonewall and went to the LBJ ranch, led by Doug and Rita Travis in their 57. You may now drive right up to the back of the ranch house and park between the private airstrip and the old plane hanger which has now been converted to a visitor center. Inside are various pictures of historical events as well as family events that took place on the ranch. LBJ's 65, 66, and 67 Lincoln Towncars are on display along with his amphi-car and early Ford open touring car custom made into a hunting wagon for him, with custom gun racks, gun rests, and a wet bar in the back seat. Guided tours of the ranch house are available.
We left there and went back to town, to the home of Doug & Rita Travis, located
in a historical area of Fredericksburg. They graciously welcomed us into their
beautiful period styled home and gave us a tour. Doug showed us his shop with his
projects in progress that included a 1937 Chevrolet pick-up and an original all
steel body 32 Ford 5 window coupe in extremely good condition. Thank you Doug and
Rita.
Those activities used up the day. Everyone went on their own for dinner.
Later
that evening some enjoyed a two hour 50's rock n roll music concert at the
Rockbox Theater. Wayne and Leslie said it was really good.
Sunday morning was another picture perfect day. We tried to catch the Houston
bunch at the motel to bid them farewell but missed them all but for John Moss
(Club President) so visited a bit and said our farewells. Doug Travis was at the
motel early to take a ride on Wayne's scooter but we missed that too. By 11:00 AM all
were gone except the Bowen's and Potthoff's. We took our own 2 car cruise down
the old San Antonio Hwy. because we weren't through having fun. We went about
10 or 12 miles to the Alamo Springs General Store and Cafe located in the middle
of nowhere and had a wonderful lunch outside on their deck. They were recently
written up in Texas Monthly magazine as having the #1 best burger in Texas. We
all four had one of their homemade 1/2 lb. burgers and the magazine didn't
lie.
After lunch we went to the old Fredricksburg railway tunnel and hiked around the trails in an attempt to use up some of that lunch. It didn't work. We stayed Sunday night, all day Monday and Monday night. Gave up and came home Tuesday morning with Dan a little bit under the weather. I think now that it is possible to have "Too Much Fun" The rest we're not tellin'!
What Happens in F'Burg stays in F'Burg!!!!!
